Choose a chewing gum without harmful colourants and flavorings

by Mirte Gratama | Guest Blogger blue®m | Oct 2, 2020

By now it is October, or as it is often called, Stoptober. The month in which many Dutch people try to (again) stop smoking. A movement that blue®m can only encourage. We don’t have to explain that smoking is anything but beneficial to a healthy mouth. Let alone for a healthy body. We can help you to make quitting easier. Now there are many different products you can buy for this, but the fact remains that there has to be a change in your behavior. At blue®m we believe in the power of developing new habits. Partly with this in mind, we have developed the blue®m dental chewing gum. A chewing gum that can help you develop a new habit and is free of harmful colourants and flavorings.

Chewing gums can contain big differences

Do you want to try a new habit or do you just like chewing gum, then our advice is: choose a good gum, because chewing gums can have big differences. For example, some chewing gums contain substances that can eventually be harmful to your health or do not benefit your oral health. Therefore, always check the back of a package and avoid the dubious substances listed below.

Titaniumdioxide (E171)

As you undoubtedly know, many of our daily foods contain different e-numbers. Most of these added and often artificial substances are fortunately safe for our health. But unfortunately not all of them are. At least, there are a number of variants, including the E171, of which some scientists are not sure whether or not it is harmful to our health.
E171, or titanium dioxide, is used in food as a white dye. You can find it in products such as chewing gum, candy and sauce. Besides food, it is also used in other products, such as toothpaste, sunscreen, paint and textiles.  If you inhale titanium dioxide (e.g. through paint), then it is possibly carcinogenic, research shows. Whether this is also the case when you ingest the substance through food is debatable (Nutrition Center). Nevertheless, it may be used, because the European Food Safety Authority has found it to be sufficiently safe under normal use. As long as there is uncertainty about these types of substances, blue®m consciously chooses to avoid them. If possible, we prefer a natural alternative.

Sugar

Of course, sugar needs no further explanation. We all know that it is not very good for our teeth. Especially when we eat it too often. If you find sugar on the list of ingredients of your chewing gum, you should avoid it from now on. Sugars are converted by bacteria into acids that can damage our teeth

Go for a natural base

The blue®m dental chewing gum does not contain titaniumdioxide, sugar or other potentially unhealthy substances. This allows you to use our chewing gum throughout the day with peace of mind. In addition, our chewing gum is now also available in a 10 piece package (in addition to the existing 30 pieces in a box). Very handy when you want to teach yourself a new habit, because this way you have a compact pack for your bag, on your desk and in the car. Curious about what’s in our gum? Below you’ll find the natural active ingredients.

Xylitol

Instead of sugar we choose Xylitol. This is a natural sweetener. Unlike sugar, sweeteners are not converted into acids. There are several studies that show that xylitol protects teeth from cavities.

Lactoferrine

Lactoferrin is one of our most powerful ingredients. It’s a protein found in our own mother’s milk and cow’s milk. It occurs naturally in saliva and is lethal to bad bacteria. You can see it as a natural antibiotic that protects us against all kinds of fungi, bacteria and viruses. Lactoferrin is 96% pure cow’s milk protein. Since only a very low % lactoferrin is added to our chewing gum, it does not pose a direct risk to users with a cow’s milk protein allergy. But if you are very allergic to cow’s milk protein, please note: (read more here).

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)

You may know that you can bake delicious cookies with baking soda, but did you know that it can also contribute to a healthier mouth in a responsible way? Sodium bicarbonate seems to be effective in removing plaque and reducing inflamed gums.

Manuka-oil

Manuka is a plant from New Zealand that has been used for centuries for its proven medicinal properties. Manuka oil is best known for its disinfecting and antibacterial properties. A function that benefits oral health.

Manuka Honey

Besides oil, the Manuka plant can also be used to make honey. In this form, it particularly combats inflammation and ensures faster wound healing. No other type of honey has such a high medicinal effect as Manuka honey.
