Getting braces later in life? These are the different types of braces for adults

Are you not satisfied with the position of your teeth? Do you have too little space in your mouth or do you have teeth that do not fit together properly? If so, braces can provide a solution. Nowadays, there are many different types of braces to help reposition teeth. From removable braces to bracket blocks, you can read more about the different types of braces below..

Metal braces

These fixed braces, also called lock, plate or block braces, consist of brackets (“clasps”) that are bonded to the teeth. In these, a flexible wire is placed, which straightens the crooked teeth. The wire running through the brackets causes your teeth to shift gradually by applying force on the teeth. Your teeth will be a little looser in the jaw because of this brace, so they can be shifted slowly.

Invisible braces

Ceramic (white) brackets
These fixed braces work basically the same as the metal “clasps” braces described above, but are less visible.  The white clasps are made of ceramic instead of metal, so depending on the color of your teeth, they are barely visible.

Invisalign® brace
An Invisalign® brace goes one step further in invisibility. There are several types of translucent braces, Invisalign® being the most well-known. Our queen Maxima has had one. This brace consists of a custom-made bit. This removable, almost invisible cover fits tightly around your teeth and you wear it 22 hours a day and only take it off when eating and drinking. Every two weeks you replace the bit with a new one. Step by step, the bit pushes your teeth into the correct position.

Invisible braces do get dirty very quickly. But with the right products, cleaning methods and care tips, you can keep them clean. You can read more about that in this article.

Plate brace

A plate brace is a removable brace that consists of a resin plate that sits against the palate. Attached to the plate is a metal wire that runs along the front of your teeth. Attached to this are iron brackets that keep the brace in place. A plate brace is often used to do simple tooth corrections. These braces can also be used in the beginning of treatment to create space.

What should you look for when choosing braces?

Straightening your teeth with braces can be a good idea. It is still quite an investment in yourself. Not just financially, but physically as well. Wearing braces can be painful and can bring all kinds of restrictions. So don’t take it lightly and make an informed choice.
