Oral care is essential in the fight against Covid-19
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Dutch people have become more concerned about their own health and that of their loved ones. This results in many people being more aware of their health. Nutrition, exercise and the condition of the immune system have received more attention due to corona.
Bluem, the company in healthy oral care products, conducted a survey of more than 130 people last month. And what did it reveal? More than 90% of respondents said they know that good oral health is essential to fighting Corona.
When asked what grade people give themselves regarding their oral health, the average comes out to 8.8. A high rating, however, this survey was only conducted amongst blue®m customers. People who take better than average care of themselves and have a high level of awareness when it comes to oral health. But shockingly… 1 in 10 say they sometimes skip their morning brushings when they are working from home.
Key Findings
- Half of those surveyed are concerned about their health;
- More than a quarter of respondents are taking more supplemental nutritional supplements since Corona;
- Over 70% consider strong immune system the most important tool to counteract corona;
- Over 50% consider healthy diet, sufficient exercise and mental health as the second most important pillar in the fight against Covid-19.
Opinions regarding vaccination are divided
Despite the fact that respondents consider good health very important to keep Corona out, more than half do want to get vaccinated as soon as possible. One in five is still in doubt. The remaining 20% would rather not be vaccinated.
Correlation between oral problems and the severity of Covid-19
A new study, just published in the renowned Journal of Clinical Periodontology, has shown the link between periodontitis and the severity of COVID-19 infection. But there is also clear evidence that healthy diet, adequate vitamin D, sufficient exercise and mental peace play an important role. For example, in many patients under 70, health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease are the reason they end up in the hospital or in the ICU. According to various specialists, it is precisely these conditions that can be prevented and remedied with a healthy lifestyle.
