bluem vs. the golden standard: a unique study with promising results

Wijhe, The Netherlands, June 16, 2021 – A scientific study with groundbreaking results has been published in the highly recognised magazine Clinical Oral Investigations. Massively shifting away from the ‘gold standard’ -chlorhexidine- to a body-friendly alternative -local oxygen therapy- now seems closer than ever. This is in line with the trend towards more sustainable dentistry and good news for the innovative, conscious dentist.

A unique yet complex methodology to simulate the human body

Researchers often ask which data is available to show and prove oxygen technology has the same impact as CHX. Therefore a study with a complex methodology was performed at Guarulhos University. Prof. Bruno Bueno-Silva and Magda Feres, who are in charge of the lab at the faculty in São Paulo, used an unique in-vitro model. The model, which has been developed together with researchers from Forsyth Institute, Harvard University, closely resembles the characteristics of the human body in an in-vitro set-up most similar to the human microbiome oral cavity. The researchers were able to create a biofilm of 31 species, a collection of bacteria present with humans experiencing oral diseases, like periodontitis and peri-implantitis. In comparable studies only three to ten different species of bacteria are being used to simulate the human oral microbiota. The oral cavity has at least 700 different bugs, and it is the most contaminated part of the human body.

Bluem topical oxygen therapy similar and at points better than chlorhexidine

The study aimed to investigate the metabolic activity of hydro-carbon-oxo-borate complex (HCOBc) on a multi-species subgingival biofilm. The study conducted by Professor Jamil Shibli and coworkers shows that blue®m oral gel has a comparable effect against periodontal pathogens but a better effect than chlorhexidine on pathogens of the red complex. These are the most pathogenic bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola). Besides having an antibacterial impact, bluem modulates and grows the good bacteria needed for a healthy balance in the mouth.

“Compared to chlorhexidine Bluem does not only have antimicrobial properties but a wound-healing effect as well. This is an absolute bonus to consider working with bluem,” according to the enthusiastic researcher, Prof. Shibli. “ Especially when you imagine all the negative side effects of chlorhexidine, like staining teeth and loss of taste. The next step will be to test in the mouth (in-vivo) the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases.”
