Vegetarian? Pay attention to this!

Are you a vegetarian? Chances are your gums are super healthy! In 2013 the Hannover Medical School researched the oral health of vegetarians and what turned out to be? Vegetarians have better periodontal health, which means: less gum disease, less plaque and overall more healthy teeth. It appears that vegetarians generally take better care of their teeth and also have a healthier lifestyle. Good job!
However, there are certain points of interest when you are a vegetarian. For example, research has shown that as a vega you have a higher risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, tooth erosion and also of cavities. And do you actually pay attention to the ingredients in your toothpaste or mouthwash? Read all about it in this article!

A risk of tooth erosion

People who do not eat meat generally have a more conscious lifestyle. Vegetarians, for example, consume more fruit and vegetables. Healthy! But the higher consumption of acidic foods also leads to an increased risk of tooth erosion. Acids affect your tooth enamel and could dissolve the hard protective layer around your teeth. So watch out with acidic products: don’t eat them too often each day and wait with brushing your teeth after eating or drinking something acidic. This gives your mouth time to neutralise the acidity.

Greater chance of cavities

A conscious lifestyle often means more fruit and vegetables and less refined sugars. But what many people are not aware of is that fruit also contains (natural) sugars. These are as harmful to your teeth as refined sugars. So, be careful when consuming natural sugars: limit your eating times and don’t forget to brush your teeth well. Don’t forget to visit your dentist or dental hygienist regularly. Research shows that vegetarians only go to the dentist once a year on average, while non-vegetarians go about twice a year.

Did you know that not all toothpastes are free of animal products? Toothpastes containing fluoride are sometimes produced using beef fat. In addition, glycerine is an ingredient in many self care products. This is a solvent that can be extracted from vegetable oil or pork fat. Do you want to make sure that the products you use are free of animal products? Take a look at the packaging, because it often says so there.

blue®m toothpastes do not contain any ingredients from beef or pork fat. If you are a vegetarian, you can use both the fluoride-containing and fluoride-free variant.

Meat contains a lot of protein, iron, vitamins B1 and B12. As a vegetarian, you need to get these nutrients from other products. Think of eggs, legumes, soy products, nuts and seeds. The most important thing is to pay attention to sufficient intake of vitamin B12, as this substance is only found in animal products. For this reason, many vegetarians take a dietary supplement. Please note that not all capsules are vegetarian. Blue®m teeth & bone formula contains vitamin B12, zinc and iron and consists of vegetarian capsules made from vegetable cellulose. This supplement is therefore good to use as a vegetarian.
